HARVESTING WINDOW OF SONAMASURI
Deciding when exactly maturity has taken place is very important due to calamities like cyclones and hailstorms during harvesting period. Harvesting has to be done when 80% of grains in the panicle are mature. Maturity can be decided correctly by rubbing lower grains of panicle between thumb and the pointing finger. If milk is coming out of grain the crop is not mature. If powder is coming it is the correct time of maturity. If grain is coming it is over mature. Delay in harvesting at this stage will result in grain shedding. It is desirable to harvest at correct maturity even though stem is still green. Sona Masuri takes about 32 days from flowering to maturity. Moisture content of grain at this stage is 18-24%.
Yield
Yield levels under good management: 30-34 quintals/Ac
  • Average : 20-25 ”
  • Drill sown : 14-22 ”
Storage Management
To ensure moisture below 13% until driers come into practice dry paddy seed in sun between 9-11am for 5-6 days.Beetles affect them in storage. Gunny bags can be treated with 5% neem oil.
Economics
Normally cost of cultivation is Rs.12000 to 18000/Ac depending on local conditions. However, low cost of cultivation under organic cultivation ensures high profitability. On farm availability of seed, manures and pest control measures ensure maximum saving in cost of cultivation. Market situation at present is favourable to rice cultivation due to higher procurement rates. Net profit depends on prevailing market price.
Important substitute varieties for BPT 5204 in different states:
No variety equal in quality with regard to consumer acceptance equivalent to BPT 5204 was evolved until now
Compromising in quality BPH tolerant varieties like Vijetha (MTU 1001), Katandora Sannalu (MTU-1010), can be grown in AP, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Orissa Grow gall midge tolerant varieties like Srikakulam Sannalu (RGL 2537), Taramati (RNR 23064), Jagityala samba (JGL 3844) in AP, Cultivation of 100% blast resistant variety like Nellore Masuri (NLR 34449) can also be tried in AP
IET 19766 (27P11): A hybrid excelled BPT 5204 in yield with similar grain quality characters. It has a flowering duration of 102 days and identified for Karnataka and Maharashtra during 2010. Consumer acceptance and market for this are to be observed.
Selection of varieties should be done carefully keeping in mind,
  • 1. Market price
  • 2. Consumer acceptance
  • 3. Yield
  • 4. Pest and disease resistance etc.
